Savvy Shopper: MPG System of Measuring Fuel Economy Needs Revamping

2009_mini_e_actf34_ns_112409_815.jpgWhen I was a car salesman I used to check shoppers agitated from car to car along rows of vehicles looking at the window sticker. They seemed interested in two things: price and fuel economy. It's ironic since both of those figures were highly unreliable.

Since then, the EPA has changed the grouping for activity miles per gallon and introduced the useful "combined" rating. We ofttimes look at this figure and study it to the lifetime average fuel frugalness our long constituent cars get. It's pretty accurate.

Last week I sat in on a conference call with EPA officials who are revising the fuel frugalness grouping again and are considering dramatic changes so that, among other things, shoppers crapper study automobile cars to gas supercharged cars. Here are a few things Edmunds.com suggested.
